Salat al-Duha

Summarized from http://www.sunnah.org/ibadaat/salat_al_duha.htm

Bismillah Al-Rahman Al-Rahim

The morning prayer (offered between Fajr and Dhuhr) is called Salat al-Duha.

It is also known by the names 1) Sibhat al-Duha (Sibha meaning supererogatory; Duha meaning morning), 2) Salat al-Awwabin (meaning Prayer of the oft-returning – this term is also related to the word “tawba” which means ‘to repent’); this prayer is usually referred to as Salat al-Awwabin when it is prayed in mid-morning about one or two hours prior to Dhuhr, 3) Salat al-Ishraq (meaning Sunrise prayer – think of shurooq as sunrise), and 4) Salat al-Fath (meaning the Victory Prayer because the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) prayed this upon entering Makkah and so this has become the sunnah of military leaders when entering a newly conquered region.)

Salat al-Duha is a Sunnah Mu’akkada which means that it is an emphasized or recommended sunnah. Abu Hurayra (by Ahmed in his musnad) narrated “My beloved instructed me never to leave three things until I die: fasting three days a month, praying Salat al-Witr before sleep, and praying 2 rak’ats of Salat al-Duha, which is Salat al-Awwabin.” The preferred time for it begins after one-quarter of the day has passed. On the day of `Eid, it is preferable to pray al-Duha before Salat al-`Eid.

When I was at an Islamic camp a few years ago, our leaders always recommended us to pray Fajr, then do some sort of Dhikr (either reading Qur’an, doing tasbeeh, or making du’aa) until about 15 or 20 minutes after the sun rose, and then pray Salat al-Duha. According to a hadith narrated by `Utba ibn `Abd by al-Tabarani, one who does this gets the rewards of a pilgrim who makes both the major and minor pilgrimage! As related by al-Hasan ibn `Ali by al-Bayhaqi, Allah (SWT) will also protect this person from hell fire.

According to most hadith, Salat al-Duha is 2 rak’ats however there are some narrations that indicate it could be prayed in up to 12 rak’ats.

This salat is a form of Sadaqa. The prophet (SAWS) stated that in the morning, every one of our limbs must pay a sadaqa . He (SAWS) said that every tasbih, every tahmid, every tahlil, every takbir, every command of good, and every forbiddance of evil is a form of Sadaqa and all of this is accomplished through two rak’ats one can pray in Duha. Salat al-Duha was a tradition of all of the prophets (upon whom be peace) including the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS). As a matter of fact, Prophets Dawud, Sulaiman, and Ayyub (AS) are all called “Awwab” in the Qur’an.

Lastly, Salat al-Duha is especially recommended for those who miss tahajjud (prayers in the last one-third of the night) and acts as its replacement.

Ramadan Mubarak! Thank you for the wise words of the hadith. When our every movement, every thought and every breath becomes a prayer, then the path of love is completed.

      Wa ‘alaykum as-salaam,

To my knowledge, it’s recommended to read Surah As-Shams in the first rakah and Surah Ad-Duha in the second. Hope that helps.

      As-salamualaikum.

u said the “salat-al-duha” is a replacement of tahjoot sala, how is that?
coz tahjoot is unique. its done in the 3rd quarter of the night when Allah comes down to the lowest level of heaven and grants wish’s for his servent’s?, there is nothing like tahjoot salah, but the nears one is salat-al-hajet/hajha, which can be done any time but the preferred time is in between the azan and the iquama?

    thanks badrul….

Accorsing to some scholars there is no salat al ishraq.. this content is in accordance to that understanding. According to it, luha time starts 10 to 15mins afta sunrise. What prayed then is not ishraq but luha itself

    salaam alaikum,
I would like to know of I can pray salatud-dhuhaa after the adhaan for Zuhr has been called. I had a situation where I was busy all night and could not neglect Qiyamullayl so by the time I was done with Fajr I was extremely sleepy and I couldn’t wait for sunrise to pray the salatud-dhuhaa. I also overslept and woke up just 20 minutes be for Zuhr. I was able to pray two raka’ats but the adhaan for Zuhr was called while I was in the prayer. My intention was to pray two sets of two raka’ats (making it four raka’ats) but since it is said that the time for that salah ends before Zuhr I’m doubting if I can still pray the remaining two raka’ats. It would really help me if someone shares a bit on what they know about this. Thank you and may Allah (SWT) bless you.

Ten causes that result in Allah’s love for His slave and the slave’s love for his Lord – By Imam ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah

1. Reciting the Qur’aan while pondering over its meanings and what is meant by it. 2. Getting closer to Allah by performing voluntary deeds after completing obligatory deeds. This is as is stated in a Hadeeth Qudsi: “My slave continues getting closer to Me by performing voluntary deeds until I love him.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree] 3. Continual remembrance of Allah under all circumstances, with one’s tongue, heart and actions. The extent of one’s love of Allah is determined by this. 4. Giving precedence to what He loves over what you love when you are overtaken by your desires. 5. The heart being avid of Allah’s Names, and Attributes and the heart roaming in that garden of knowledge. 6. observing Allah’s kindness, goodness and bounties, both hidden and open. 7. And this is the most wonderful, the heart being soft, subdued and meek before Allah. 8. Being alone with Allah during the time when the Lord descends during the last portion of the night while reading His Book and ending that by asking for forgiveness and repenting. 9. Sitting with the beloved and sincere, benefiting from the most fruitful of their speech. And not to speak unless speaking is more beneficial and you know that it will improve your state and be beneficial to others. 10. Remaining away from every cause that comes between the heart and Allah. These ten causes take the lovers to the station of true love and bring them to their Beloved.
